Above Suspicion: Set 1

It’s no mystery what makes this series great.

Television series

Rod Lott
As beloved as Lynda La Plante’s long-running crime series Prime Suspect is, her Above Suspicion deserves equal adoration. It’s another example of how the British leave viewers wanting more, rather than taking the American approach of burning them out, because the first two seasons — all seven episodes between them — come collected on Acorn Media’s two-disc Set 1. This leaves two more seasons as yet unreleased, so I pray we see a Set 2 soon down the pipe.

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

The truth hurts.

Documentary

Rod Lott
I can't believe — just. cannot. believe. — that Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory lost the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this past spring. And to a football movie, no less! It's another case of the jocks running ragged over the outcasts, except these outcasts were able to effect something few docs achieve: change.

Searching for Sonny

At least two-thirds of it is worth seeking out.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Through nearly every frame of the indie crime comedy Searching for Sonny, it is obvious that writer/director Andrew Disney's debut would not exist if not for Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket. That 1996 cult classic bears a quirky, amiable stamp in the way it deals with three lovable losers, which Disney has done his best to duplicate, right down to its distinctive beats and rhythms.

Perry Mason Mysteries: The Original Warner Bros. Movies Collection

I was underwhelmed, your honor.

Thriller

Rod Lott
I should have listened to Ron Backer. In his new book, Mystery Movie Series of 1930s Hollywood, he more or less warns would-be audiences away from trying any of the early 1930s’ half-dozen movies based on Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason character.

The Ice House

A chilling mystery starring a pre-heat Daniel Craig.

Television series

Rod Lott
Currently riding high on the 007 tidal wave known as Skyfall, Daniel Craig enjoys one of his earliest roles in 1997’s The Ice House, a two-part, three-hour BBC murder mystery adapted from Minette Walters’ novel. Luckily for Craig’s legion of fans, he does not play the dead body found putrid, nude and devoured from the abdomen down.

Deathtrap

Warner Archive raises Caine in a new Blu-ray of an old mystery.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Just a decade after starring in Sleuth, Michael Caine returned to similar fare in 1982's Deathtrap. Both are crafty mysteries with a bare minimum of characters and even fewer settings, but many twists to leave viewers with spinning heads.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXV

For the 25th time, we’ve got Movie Sign!

Television series

Rod Lott
A noticeable difference exists with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXV from Shout! Factory’s previous sets: This one is comparatively light on extras. However, that’s hardly a knock against it, because the show itself is just too damned good on its own.

The Mad Magician

Vincent Price has a few tricks up his sleeve ...

Horror

Rod Lott
Sick of creating innovative tricks only to see someone else take credit for it, inventor Don Gallico (Vincent Price) decides to try his hand at performing live magic as Gallico the Great, aka The Mad Magician.
