Any cries of nepotism in the case of Rashida Jones officially can be buried, and the dirt above patted with a shovel for good measure.

Argo

As a director, Ben Affleck ratchets up the tension in this fact-based thriller.

Thriller

Phil Bacharach
Generating suspense from a story that is a matter of historical record is no easy thing. That was the primary challenge facing Ben Affleck and Chris Terrio, the director-star and writer, respectively, of Argo, a thriller inspired by a real-life covert operation that helped rescue six U.S. embassy workers out of Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. It's a testament to the skills of the filmmakers that Argo delivers a deluge of suspense even when its ending is never in doubt.

With Great Power ...: The Stan Lee Story

A not-quite-Marvelous look at a pop-culture giant.

Documentary

Rod Lott
There's a great story surrounding Stan Lee and Marvel Comics. I know because a month ago, I read all about it in Sean Howe’s new book about the very topic. As for the documentary With Great Power  ...: The Stan Lee Story, however, it's perfectly fine if the only portrait you care to see is superficial, self-laudatory and largely wart-free.

The Possession

This is why you shouldn’t go antiquing.

Horror

Rod Lott
Certainly I’m not the only one who confused The Possession and The Apparition when they played theaters late this summer. After all, the two horror films not only had soundalike titles and shared similar premises, but opened within seven days of one another.

The Protector / Crime Story

Jackie Chan is twice the man.

Action

Rod Lott
Who in the hell hires Jackie Chan and then tells him not to kick a lot? The Exterminator director James Glickenhaus, that’s who.

The Bay

Terror tries to get ‘eek’-ological.

Horror

Rod Lott
What’s an Academy Award-winning director like Barry Levinson doing in a found-footage horror movie like The Bay? Trying to revive a Rain Man career, I’d assume, following 15 years of flops like Envy, Bandits and Man of the Year. Here's another.

Compliance

Do as you’re told and watch ... if you can.

Thriller

Rod Lott
File Compliance under “stranger than fiction.” Although not a documentary, it is based on a true story, and one so utterly outrageous that many will refuse to believe it anyway.
