The Protector / Crime Story

Jackie Chan is twice the man.

Action

Rod Lott
Who in the hell hires Jackie Chan and then tells him not to kick a lot? The Exterminator director James Glickenhaus, that’s who.

Sushi Girl

For those who like it raw.

Thriller

Rod Lott
No matter what you see or hear, don't move a muscle. That’s the advice one very bad man gives to the titular Sushi Girl. Particularly squeamish viewers won’t be able to adhere to such counsel, as this minor crime gem revels in the revolting.

The Tarzan Collection Starring Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry

Contract a case of jungle fever.

Action

Rod Lott
What an unwieldy title The Tarzan Collection Starring Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry is. Then again, so many actors have donned the loincloth of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ iconic lord of the jungle across nearly 100 movies and counting, so specificity is required. This particular five-flick, five-disc set from Warner Archive rounds up the entire turns of the two men mentioned in the title.

In Their Skin

There go the neighborhoods.

Thriller

Rod Lott
I like In Their Skin under its international title, Replicas. Even if that makes Jeremy Power Regimbal’s directorial debut sound too sci-fi, it’s more interesting and apt.

Trance

‘Trainspotting’ engineer Danny Boyle delves back into the world of crime with ‘Trance,’ with less-than-hypnotic results.

Thriller

Rod Lott
After fiddling around with Oscar a couple of times with Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, director Danny Boyle gets back to doing what he does best: the thriller. However, in Trance, opening today in Oklahoma City, the flashy filmmaker bears a light coat of rust.

Hopper: A Journey into the American Dream — Tom Folsom

Nonfiction

Rod Lott
When Tom Folsom terms his new nonfiction work, Hopper, as “a rebel biography,” he’s not kidding. Not only is his subject a rebel, but so is his approach. A you-are-there POV, fonts that interrupt the narrative — you’ve never read a celebrity bio quite like it, and that’s certainly befitting of its star.

Terminator Anthology

Get it before Skynet takes over.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Quoth the cyborg, “I’ll be back.” And he was. And now again, this time in the form of Terminator Anthology, Warner Home Video’s Blu-ray box set of the four franchise films to date. It could be argued that the movies stopped being good when James Cameron stopped directing them. After revisiting the quartet, I don't agree — I strongly agree.

Birdemic 2: The Resurrection

What the flock?!?

Thriller

Rod Lott
For those worried that Birdemic 2: The Resurrection doesn’t match the awfulness of the 2010 original, know this: The first five minutes are of its ostensible leading man walking. The first exchange of dialogue: “Hi!” “Hi.”

Mold!

Spread the word: a B movie that’s semi-infectious.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Ignore the grim, apocalyptic cover of this DVD, which depicts the flick’s vibe so inaccurately, it even drops the title’s exclamation point. Make no mistake: Mold! has mirth on its mind ... even if those brains have spilled onto the floor.
