Congratulations for publishing Dr. Dana Stone’s timely and splendidly written “The truth of emergency contraception” (Commentary, Feb. 20, Oklahoma Gazette). Her rationale was validly bolstered by well-supported and cited facts. Her commentary was an effective, appropriate and much-needed contribution to a volatile and poorly understood subject — more accurately, a widely misunderstood and high-profile controversy of the day.

Rev. Kern, your March 13 letter, “What evolutionists fear” (Oklahoma Gazette), betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of evolutionary theory. Spontaneous generation was an incorrect scientific hypothesis that Louis Pasteur did, indeed, disprove. However, to equate spontaneous generation and the current definition of abiogenesis is disingenuous. Spontaneous generation referred to the idea that individual present-day organisms could arise from nonliving matter, such as maggots seeming to arise from rotten meat out of thin air.

In response to “Embryonic” by Dr. Dominic M. Pedulla (Letters, Oklahoma Gazette, March 27), I have to admit that I am taken aback by a man of science being so disconnected from the idea that unchecked procreation will not have negative consequences in the long term.

In reference to the article by C.G. Niebank III about problem gambling in Oklahoma (”Losing bet,” March 13, Oklahoma Gazette), it is true that more money is needed to deal with this issue. As the story indicated, only $750,000 is earmarked to help those addicted to gaming at Oklahoma’s 117 casinos, four racetracks and dozens of bingo parlors.

In a recent letter to the editor in favor of burning toxic coal to generate electricity, Doug Rixmann (”Bashing coal,” May 1, Oklahoma Gazette) repeatedly demonstrated his lack of understanding of the consequences of burning coal to produce electricity, as well as the costs and risks associated with retrofitting older plants rather than retiring them and replacing them with clean energy.

Oklahoma by record is the “reddest” state in the Union. It is the only state in which every county voted Republican in the last two presidential elections. The Republicans have made it clear that they feel the government is an enemy — a “tyrannical” government that further compounds the right to bear arms as a necessity for protection against such government. It has been made clear that their feeling is that they do not need the government in their lives.
