The Kings of Summer

A well-seasoned dramedy.

Drama

Rod Lott
Tired of rules and overbearing parents, best buds Joe (Nick Robinson, TV's Melissa & Joey) and Patrick (Gabriel Basso, Super 8) decide they aren't going to take it anymore. Thus, The Kings of Summer run away from home and build one of their own from scrap material, deep into the woods where their folks cannot find them.

House of Wax

The Price of excellence.

Horror

Rod Lott
The first 3-D movie I ever saw was 1953's House of Wax, but in a revival run in the early 1980s. My uncle took me and my brothers to it one night at Northpark Mall, and I recall him having to tie the big glasses on my youngest brother's small head with shoelaces.

The Amityville Horror Trilogy

"For God's sake, get it!"

Horror

Rod Lott
Although entries in the Amityville Horror franchise now number 11, the movies stopped playing theaters after the third go-round, with the exception of 2005's needless remake. The first three films were collected on an MGM DVD boxed set to coincide with that remake, but in carrying over those extras and adding many more of its own, Shout! Factory's new package proves more definitive. Plus, it's on Blu-ray.

Room 237

Rhetoric on redrum.

Documentary

Rod Lott
The Shining is about a novelist who goes mad while hotel-sitting over a winter break. The Shining is about the white man's genocide of Native Americans. The Shining is about the Holocaust. The Shining is about how Stanley Kubrick faked the Apollo moon landings.

The Hangover Part III

Let's 'Hang' again.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Once The Hangover became a monster hit in the summer of '09, a sequel was inevitable. So was the backlash, which greeted The Hangover Part II upon its arrival two years later. Complained the multiplex populace, "It's too much like the first one!"

The Secret of Crickley Hall

Trick or treat? Totally a treat.

Television series

Rod Lott

What is The Secret of Crickley Hall? Well, if I told you, it wouldn't be a secret. The less juvenile answer: It's a superb BBC limited series that'll plunk you in the proper Halloween spirit.

This Is the End

If only that were true.

Comedy

Louis Fowler
This Is the End is the cinematic equivalent of being stuck in a living room with a group of High Times subscribers who have plenty of money to burn and plenty of fart jokes to release. Yes, there is a twist to it all, but it seems more like an afterthought than an actual plot point.

Corruption

Grand Moff Tarkin does Grand Guignol.

Thriller

Rod Lott
During my summer vacation, I read the new book Offbeat: British Cinema's Curiosities, Obscurities and Forgotten Gems. It's the kind of volume I have to keep paper and pen next to me while reading, because I come across a lot of titles I must see, however difficult and rare.

How to Seduce a Virgin

Not an instructional video — sorry, kiddos.

Drama

Rod Lott
One need not wait long for the really weird to rear its head in a Jess Franco flick. In the case of 1974's How to Seduce a Virgin, it's all of four minutes, when Martine flashes back to that time she cut off her lover's manhood with a straight razor — y'know, the good ol' days.

Ghost Team One

A spirited spoof.

Comedy

Rod Lott
With this Halloween season being the first without a new chapter in the Paranormal Activity series, perhaps a Paranormal Activity spoof is the next best thing. There's no shortage of them, but of the roughly half-dozen I've seen, Ghost Team One is the only one worth watching.
