Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Chimps ahoy!

Science Fiction

Rod Lott
Say what you will about Tim Burton’s widely despised 2001 remake of “Planet of the Apes,” but if it hadn't made serious bank, this prequel would not exist.

Blitz

Make a play for the Stath!

Action

Rod Lott
"Blitz" isn't your average Jason Statham flick, in that: a) it skipped theaters, and b) his partner is a homosexual. I can't recall seeing that mix in cinema crime stories since the days of Ryan O'Neal and John Hurt in "Partners," and that 1982 film was a comedy.

Droids for your Droid

Preview the ‘Star Wars’ Blu-ray set on your smartphone.

A long time ago, at a movie theater over there on May, I first saw those words, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.” That’s “Star Wars,” you know. While the 6-year-old me loved it, it didn’t define my childhood — or adulthood, as it has so many.

Still, I’m interested to see what else George Lucas has up his sweater sleeves with next month’s release of “Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray. With a street date of Sept. 16, you have several weeks to go, but you can get a sneak peek right now at the set’s 40-plus hours of bonus features via the new “Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access App.”

Available “for all iDevices,” it offers samples of “never-before-seen content sourced from the Lucasfilm Archives such as matte paintings and concept art; prop, maquette and costume turnarounds; supplementary interviews with cast and crew; and more.”

The app is free. The box set costs $139.99 more than that. —Rod Lott

Medium Raw: Night of the Wolf

A howlingly enjoyable treat.

Horror

Rod Lott
With “Medium Raw: Night of the Wolf” and its seemingly unconnected storylines, I don’t feel like I watched a movie. I feel like I watched four back-to-back episodes of a miniseries too out-there, too jumbled for prime-time tastes, like Stephen King’s “Kingdom Hospital.”

Camp Hell

Holy ‘Meatballs’!

Horror

Rod Lott
At the summer camp at the center of this film, cell phones are christened "hell phones," fraternizing with the opposite sex is not allowed, masturbation is a sin that prevents you from entering the gates of Heaven, and everyone goes around calling each other "Brother" and "Sister.”

Meet Monica Velour

XXX marks the dramatic spot.

Drama

Rod Lott
Romancing a porn star: If "The Girl Next Door" was the Hollywood fantasy, "Meet Monica Velour" is the grim reality — comparatively speaking, of course.

Alfred Hitchcock: A Legacy of Suspense

How's 29 hours of Hitch suit you?

Thriller

Rod Lott
Alfred Hitchcock's early films are no stranger to bargain-priced box sets of DVDs, but not usually all in one place. Or almost in one place.
