‘No tolerance’ doesn’t teach

Commentary

John Thompson
The bipartisan MAPS for Kids Student Achievement Committee knew that Oklahoma City could not increase student performance without first creating safe and orderly schools. We also knew that would be our toughest challenge.

Shiver

Belongs in the shi**er.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Shiver's box art sports a wonderfully dark-humored tagline: "She had a good head on her shoulders ... until she met him." It recalls — if not outright rips off — Re-Animator's infamous line of "Herbert West has a good head on his shoulders … and another one on his desk."

Body Bags / Assault on Precinct 13

Tales from the Carp.

Horror

Rod Lott
John Carpenter is a hoot as the host of Body Bags, a 1993 horror anthology that was to Showtime what Tales from the Crypt was to HBO at the time, only not a continuing series. Playing the pasty-faced coroner who intros the telepic's three stories, Carpenter also directs the first two, leaving the final to Texas Chainsaw impresario Tobe Hooper.

School values don’t fit into a single score

Commentary

John Thompson
It is no surprise that the release of this year’s Oklahoma A-F school report cards again has been a fiasco.

August: Osage County

Set and shot in Oklahoma, August: Osage County loses its darkly comic teeth on the way to the silver screen. Now, it simply bites.

Drama

Rod Lott
August: Osage County is the worst kind of Oscar bait: unearned. Seemingly hoping to join the race by pedigree alone, the Oklahoma-set family drama is as patently false as a plastic worm concealing the business end of a fishing hook. At a glance, it looks like the real deal, but look closer. See, kids? All for show!

Song and dance

Chicago the musical hits the marquee of the Civic Center Music Hall — and a nearly sold-out run.

Features

Giancarlo Gonzalez
Chicago, the award-winning national touring musical revival, is a spectacular treat for Oklahoma City. This is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and its sleek, jazzy, fun, dark, sexy, amazing songs and dances, along with its high-energy performances, will make for a memorable night for those lucky enough to see it. Accolades cover the show from head to toe.
