Demonizing rich people

David Hull
President Obama’s approval rating is north of 50 percent. Seriously?

The last laugh

Letters to the Editor

Jon Parker
I read David Hull’s tirade on President Obama’s economic record (Letters, “Demonizing rich people, May 1, Oklahoma Gazette) on Friday, May 3. That was the day it was announced that we had added 165,000 jobs in April, and the February and March numbers were revised upward by 114,000 jobs, bringing unemployment down to 7.5 percent. It was also the day the Dow and S&P 500 closed at all-time highs.

The I-word

CFN

Gazette staff
It’s been a rough few weeks for the Obama administration, what with a couple of scandals — some more legitimately scandalous than others — rocking the nation’s capital and consuming the 24/7 cable news cycle.

The good, the bad and the goofy

Commentary

Cal Hobson
Our legislators are home this summer, having completed their 2013 work. It was a session that saw good bills killed, bad bills consuming too much precious time and the passage of a ridiculous tax cut that doesn’t even kick in until 2016.

Time to inform, not denounce

Commentary

Rev. Jonalu Johnstone
Our Oklahoma officials don’t shy from grandstanding complaints about the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Unlikely allies

Facing criminal blackmail charges, a state Tea Party leader enlists the help of Oklahoma’s ACLU.

News

Brendan Hoover
Sooner Tea Party co-founder Al Gerhart has a surprising new ally in his defense against state blackmail charges stemming from a threatening email he sent to a state senator. Citing First Amendment concerns, the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has agreed to aid the carpenter-turned-political-activist who pleaded not guilty.

Getting real

CFN

Gazette staff
U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Muskogee, surprised some hard-liners in his party recently when he denounced efforts by Senate Republicans to “gut” the Affordable Care Act — law of the land for, oh, going on four years now — by opposing any legislation that would fund it.

Mr. Popular

CFN

Gazette staff
If Chicken-Fried News were to hazard a guess as to the least popular legislator at the state Capitol, our money would be on state Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City. The guy has been a consistent thorn in the side — or perhaps a fleshier body part — of House speakers, and the current one, Lawton Republican T.W. Shannon, is no exception.

A modest proposal

Letters to the Editor

Wanda Jo Stapleton
Isn’t it “special” that Oklahoma legislators, mainly Republicans, voted to protect us women from having to make those tough decisions about our bodies?

Shut ’em down?

CFN

Gazette staff
Let the party begin — the party, of course, led by the Republican Party to defund Obamacare
