Corruption

Grand Moff Tarkin does Grand Guignol.

Thriller

Rod Lott
During my summer vacation, I read the new book Offbeat: British Cinema's Curiosities, Obscurities and Forgotten Gems. It's the kind of volume I have to keep paper and pen next to me while reading, because I come across a lot of titles I must see, however difficult and rare.

How to Seduce a Virgin

Not an instructional video — sorry, kiddos.

Drama

Rod Lott
One need not wait long for the really weird to rear its head in a Jess Franco flick. In the case of 1974's How to Seduce a Virgin, it's all of four minutes, when Martine flashes back to that time she cut off her lover's manhood with a straight razor — y'know, the good ol' days.

Ghost Team One

A spirited spoof.

Comedy

Rod Lott
With this Halloween season being the first without a new chapter in the Paranormal Activity series, perhaps a Paranormal Activity spoof is the next best thing. There's no shortage of them, but of the roughly half-dozen I've seen, Ghost Team One is the only one worth watching.

Snuff

Sniff it out, brave among you.

Thriller

Rod Lott
No doubt, the story behind the 1976 film Snuff is more interesting than the story within it. (I suspect that'd be the case even if Snuff's filmmakers had bothered with plot at all.)

Static

Who's knocking at my door?

Thriller

Rod Lott
A knock at the door in the middle of the night? Never a good sign. Freshman director Todd Levin's Static sparks to life with one such nocturnal omen.

Maniac

And he wants his scalps!

Horror

Rod Lott
Reveling in the seediness that is downtown Los Angeles at night, IFC Films' Maniac is a rare remake that's better than the original. William Lustig's 1980 of the same name long has enjoyed a sizable cult, but I found it to be a thoroughly ugly film in all respects. And I actually like slasher movies!

Pacific Rim

Monsters kink.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Sometimes I revisit a beloved movie from my childhood and wonder, "What was I thinking? Do kids really have no taste?" Pacific Rim feels like one of those movies.

Queerbait

Shot in OKC, the VHS comedy Queerbait has so much against it — no script, a $100 budget, a 24-hour shoot — yet you'll be hooked.

Resolution

It will 'meth' with your head.

Horror

Rod Lott
After receiving a video of his best friend sky-high on meth, Michael (Peter Cilella) decides to do something about it. Arriving at a ramshackle, one-room home in the woods to find Chris (Vinny Curran) babbling about birds stealing his stuff and writing a book with a stray dog, Michael offers to take Chris to rehab.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Rather than retire, the Jackass franchise flirts with fiction — if not sexually harasses it — in the semi-scripted, wholly hilarious Bad Grandpa.

Comedy

Rod Lott

Riotous as they are, the Jackass movies have not been immune to the law of diminishing returns — in terms of laughs, not box office. That the fourth feature, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, is the funniest since the first, 2002's Jackass: The Movie, is something of an unexpected achievement.
