Black Limousine

A better ride than expected.

Drama

Rod Lott
Composer Jack McKenzie (David Arquette, Scream 4) is not at his best. His career has tanked due to sobriety issues stemming from an auto accident that killed one of his two children with his now ex-wife. To clear his mind and pay the bills, he takes a gig as a limo driver.

Zoom In: Sex Apartments

A nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

Thriller

Rod Lott
It's both a blessing and a shame that Zoom In: Sex Apartments carries such an exploitative title: a blessing because it may trick some horny guys into watching a better movie than they'd expect, and a shame because, well, Sex Apartments. (Hey, it could be worse: The original subtitle was Rape Apartments.)

Of Dolls & Murder

Who knew playing with dolls could help fight crime?

Documentary

Rod Lott
Susan Marks' Of Dolls & Murder is a rather straightforward documentary on an oddball subject: forensic pathologists teaching medical investigation skills to police officers via "nutshell studies."

Cherry Bomb

It's a real dud.

Action

Rod Lott
With the John Cougar Mellencamp song "Cherry Bomb," our hearts were really thumping. With the film Cherry Bomb, however, it barely registers a pulse.

Endeavour

‘Endeavour’ is ‘Morse’ code for ‘near-perfect prequel.’

Thriller

Rod Lott
Despite Inspector Morse enjoying a dozen-season run on TV, I’ve never seen an episode of the mystery series spawned from Colin Dexter’s novels. In no way did this detract from my enjoyment of Endeavour, a feature-length prequel, and is indeed enjoyable.

Some Guy Who Kills People

Some movie that’s better than it sounds.

Thriller

Rod Lott
You hear a title like Some Guy Who Kills People and think, "Is that all the energy and enthusiasm they can muster?" Well, this little thriller is a surprise, all underpromising and overdelivering, mostly due to a deft performance by '90s indie-film mainstay Kevin Corrigan (The Dictator).

Casa de Mi Padre

¡Grande! Assuming you can read.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Even if you hate it — and plenty will — you have to admit Casa de Mi Padre is a unique slice of cinema. Will Ferrell stars in this spirited parody of the Mexican telenovela. Not only is the comedy set in Mexico, but performed almost entirely in Spanish. Name one other A-lister who would dare commit to such an audience-limiting undertaking, foreign language and all. For a star of his stature to spoof something his fan base likely knows nothing about is so ballsy, it bounces.

'Bad' teacher

Now in its final season, TV’s 'Breaking Bad' has a winning formula, with science help from an OU chemistry professor.

Features

Rod Lott
University of Oklahoma chemistry professor Donna Nelson helps cook up big batches of methamphetamine. Not in real life, mind you, but as the science adviser for the Emmy-winning television show Breaking Bad.

Casting the Runes

Rent a 'Rune' with a view.

Horror

Rod Lott
I remember vividly when I first read "Casting the Runes," one of several suspense classics to pour from the pen of M.R. James, the master of the ghost story whose supernatural bent became a huge influence on H.P. Lovecraft. Just because the short story is old (1911) doesn't mean it wasn't chilling to read, and so it is with this 1979 presentation, an episode of the UK's ITV Playhouse anthology series.
