Gander at Guthrie

The making of 'Woody at 100.'

With all the Woody Guthrie coverage in today’s Gazette to commemorate the Okie folkie’s centennial, you may wish to take a peek at the mini-documentary The Making of Woody at 100.

It details Smithsonian Folkways’ efforts at compiling the new, three-disc box set, Woody at 100, which:
• came out yesterday;
• features 57 songs in total, 21 of them previously unreleased performances and six never-before-heard; and
• includes a 154-page book with essays and art galore.

Take a gander at the label’s restoration process and behind-the-scenes work:

Of Dolls & Murder

Who knew playing with dolls could help fight crime?

Documentary

Rod Lott
Susan Marks' Of Dolls & Murder is a rather straightforward documentary on an oddball subject: forensic pathologists teaching medical investigation skills to police officers via "nutshell studies."

Myriad of movies

Grab your blanket and lawn chairs, and spend some quality time with Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and The Edge.

Recently reopened after Project 180 renovations, downtown’s Myriad Botanical Gardens at 301 W. Reno has ushered in its new digs with “Movies Under the Stars.” The weekly Wednesday series began last week with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Shrek played last night, but several more screenings are scheduled, all free, all beginning at 9 p.m.

For the rest of the summer, expect:
• July 25, Grease
• Aug. 1, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (pictured, duh)
• Aug. 8, West Side Story
• Aug. 15, Never Cry Wolf
• Aug. 22, U2: Rattle and Hum
• Aug. 29, Sherlock Holmes

That’s quite a lineup compared to the usual suspects of such free film series, with U2: Rattle and Hum striking me as a particularly inspired choice. I have fond memories of seeing that music doc three times to a largely empty theater at the long-ago-closed AMC Northwest 8. (Yes, kids, this thing we call “you too” was the Justin Bieber and Katy Perry of my day: They were so big, they had their own picture show!) Suddenly, I have an itch to dig out the soundtrack.

Please note that coolers are permitted, but not open containers of *hic!* alcohol. For more information,  call 297-3995 or visit myriadgardens.org. —Rod Lott

Casting the Runes

Rent a 'Rune' with a view.

Horror

Rod Lott
I remember vividly when I first read "Casting the Runes," one of several suspense classics to pour from the pen of M.R. James, the master of the ghost story whose supernatural bent became a huge influence on H.P. Lovecraft. Just because the short story is old (1911) doesn't mean it wasn't chilling to read, and so it is with this 1979 presentation, an episode of the UK's ITV Playhouse anthology series.

Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live

Grab your things / I’ve come to take you home.

Documentary

Rod Lott
I'd say Peter Gabriel has aged wonderfully, judging from the concert film Secret World, but the performance is nearly two decades old, from 1993. Although far removed from his heyday as an MTV idol — the venue looks as if its audience were lifted from a BMW dealership super-sale — he still sounded great.

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

The truth hurts.

Documentary

Rod Lott
I can't believe — just. cannot. believe. — that Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory lost the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this past spring. And to a football movie, no less! It's another case of the jocks running ragged over the outcasts, except these outcasts were able to effect something few docs achieve: change.

Full Metal Jacket: 25th Anniversary Blu-ray Book

More than just the movie that made ‘me so horny’ a household phrase.

Drama

Rod Lott
When Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam film, Full Metal Jacket, hit theaters in the summer of 1987, I was all of 16 years old. Even I could tell it was far better than Oliver Stone’s Platoon, which by then had won four Academy Awards; by comparison, Jacket would be nominated for one, Best Adapted Screenplay, and lose it to The Last Emperor.
