Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Not to be confused with that one Green Day song.

Documentary

Rod Lott
Oddball German director Werner Herzog (“Rescue Dawn”) has done everything but, oh, make a 3-D documentary about spelunking. Scratch that — here’s the alternately weird and wonderful “Cave of Forgotten Dreams,” now on Blu-ray after a hit theatrical run.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

It's no mystery: This heroic whodunit rules.

Action

Rod Lott
Part costume drama, part fantasy, part mystery, part action and all imaginative, "Detective Dee & The Mystery of the Phantom Flame" marks a return to form for master director Tsui Hark, who helped popularize Hong Kong films in the Western hemisphere in the 1990s with the likes of the "Once Upon a Time in China" series and the Jackie Chan vehicle "Twin Dragons," but has weathered a string of more recent misses in "Zu Warriors," "Black Mask 2" and collaborations with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Our Idiot Brother

Oh, 'Brother,’ why bother?

Comedy

Rod Lott
Paul Rudd was absolutely hilarious opposite Rashida Jones! In "I Love You, Man." Paul Rudd was absolutely hilarious opposite Elizabeth Banks! In "Role Models."

Astron-6

Hey, remember the ’80s? Astron-6 won’t let you forget!

Comedy

Rod Lott
Reads the cover of the "Astron-6" DVD, "What the @#*! is -- Astron-6." I didn't know, either, but now I'm glad I do.

Around the World Under the Sea

‘By this time, my lungs were aching for air ... still.’

Action

Rod Lott
Four years after his long run on TV’s “Sea Hunt” ended, Lloyd Bridges was back in the water for 1966’s big-screen adventure “Around the World Under the Sea,” but IN COLOR!

Intruder

'Irv, cleanup on aisle everywhere!'

Horror

Rod Lott
Think back to 1989: Down at the Ranch Market, you could get something Xeroxed for just 15 cents, or buy a whole pack of cigs for $1.89!

Jessicka Rabid

Should be put down.

Horror

Rod Lott
Made for an apparent $1.99, "Jessicka Rabid" is the worst movie I've seen all year, and perhaps the year before that. I have nothing against no-budget movies as long as there's enough else going on to mitigate the financial deficiencies.

The Hangover Part II

The wolf pack is back. Plus, a monkey.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Considerable criticism has been lobbed at "The Hangover Part II" for essentially resurrecting the story template of the first film. Yeah, but really, what else could you expect them to do? Besides, it's not like director/co-writer Todd Phillips just used the same jokes.

Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion

Cute movie, and that’s no ‘Lion.’

Family

Rod Lott
I’m too young to have caught “Daktari” in its three-year run on TV in the late 1960s, but I knew of its existence. What I didn’t know is was based on a movie, the 1965 obscurity “Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion,” now available from Warner Archive.

Downtown Abbey

Before season two starts, get hooked now.

Television series

Jenny Coon Peterson
Confession: I watched all seven episodes of “Downton Abbey” on DVD over the course of two days. Instead of reflecting on what that says about my laziness, let’s focus on what that says about this near-perfect British miniseries.
