Em and the MotherSuperiors — Churches into Theaters

Joshua Boydston
As titles go, Churches into Theaters is an apt descriptor for the debut album from Oklahoma City rockers Em and the MotherSuperiors. It’s a reverential record, one that shares the gospel of classic rock, blues and soul but embraces the need to refashion it for modern times, channeling The Dead Weather, Grace Potter and Cage the Elephant along the way.

IndianGiver - Understudies

Joshua Boydston
There’s a difference between being derivative and being inspired by something, a line a lot of artists can’t seem to find — or at least don’t care to.

PBA Summer Swing

OKG7 things to do

Gazette staff

If you’re not all that into bowling, consider one thing: In addition to the PBA Oklahoma Open, there are title events at the Professional Bowling Association’s Summer Swing called the Wolf, Bear and Badger Opens. How awesome is that? (Plus, who isn’t into bowling?) The nine-day event kicks off 2 p.m. Saturday at FireLake Bowling Center, 40945 Hardesty Rd., in Shawnee and runs through May 25. Single-day passes are $10, and all-week passes are $30. Call 275-2855 or visit

Cartel crossroads

Oklahoma City is the only non-border city in the nation with the ‘consuming fire’ of heavy drug movement. Why? Our highways.

Ben Felder
An evidence recovery worker with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBN) cuts open a kilo of cocaine, exposing the white brick. On the surface of the brick, which was confiscated in a recent bust, is the faint image of a footprint, almost as if an infant’s foot was cast into a molding to be kept in a memory box.
