Internet changes the porn industry, even in Oklahoma
If video killed the radio star, then the Internet killed the porn star. Gone are the days when young actors and actresses used only the alternative-Hollywood casting couch to become video vixens and the poster faces of dark-alley theaters across the country. Now, just a video camera and an Internet connection can turn your co-workers into porn darlings.
Even in Oklahoma City. Ever checked out the local “adult gig” section of Craigslist?

ART OR PROSTITUTION?
“Hey guys, I am making myself available to you for you to make your own adult film.”
This Oklahoma City Craigslist ad was posted on Sept. 26 under the tag line “Hot erotic MILF available for your private porn film.” (Don’t ask what MILF stands for. If you don’t know, you don’t need to know.)
Those types of ads usually involve some form of payment or compensation, which skirts the legal boundaries of not only pornography, but prostitution as well.
Welcome to the world of amateur porn, where back lot studios in California’s San Fernando Valley — long considered the home of the American porn industry — are no longer needed to make adult movies and smut profits. Now the college student who needs a little extra money to help pay tuition, or the single mom who would like to buy a few Christmas gifts for the kids, can simply place an online ad and get paid the day one shows up for the shoot. For some sex enthusiasts, money is not even a factor.
There is clearly a fascination for people wanting to have sex in front of a camera, and a growing fascination to display the act in a mass media form. Don’t be fooled into thinking porn is just something immoral people on the coasts do; the business has spread and those wanting to make videos — even in states where a prayer comes before every meal — seem to be catching up with those who want to watch the videos.
In a report by the entertainment and technology review site TopTenREVIEWS, Oklahoma City ranked third in the nation for residents typing “xxx” into Internet search engines during 2006. Oklahoma City also ranked in the top 10 for “sex” and “porn” Internet searches.
“The fact is, if you go to any town in America, you are going to find people interested in ... consumption of pornography and fetishistic sexual acts,” said Bryant Paul, a professor of communication at the University of Indiana, who has studied the impact of sexual messages in the media.
“It doesn’t make it good or bad. It just makes it what it is.”
‘WILD WEST’
Nearly every day, a new ad is posted for someone wanting to make a video, be in a video or from an actual porn company looking for new talent in the Oklahoma City section of Craigslist adult gig ads.
One such local ad came from “Steve,” who was offering up his videotaping services to anyone willing to participate. The video would then be submitted to a Web site that specializes in homemade porn movies. Viewers would pay a fee to watch the video, with the money shared between the Web site, producer and performers. However, many Web sites offer up amateur porn for free, or some may provide about a minute of the video to entice viewers to pay for the full version.
When contacted by Oklahoma Gazette, Steve said he was willing to do an interview, but only under certain conditions. Those conditions could not be met. Steve was concerned about legal ramifications of adult material.
“Oklahoma has some pretty archaic laws on the books and even doing nude work is technically illegal here,” Steve wrote in an e-mail. “Are you aware that even simple possession of pornography is a felony in OK?”
That depends, according to Oklahoma County First District Attorney Scott Rowland.
“That is a very interesting area of law in which criminal law and the First Amendment intersect,” Rowland said. “The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the First Amendment prohibits states from criminalizing pornography, although they may place reasonable restrictions on its access to minors.
“Interestingly, the First Amendment protects pornographic material, although it doesn’t protect obscene material.”
And as we all know, obscenity is in the eye of the community.
One local porn producer looking to make a buck off his videos goes by the name of Lucky Alphonse. The Oklahoma City dweller was recently the subject of an investigation by the television station KOKH FOX 25.
Alphonse ran ads on Craigslist wanting participants and an audience for a local “gang bang” shoot. FOX 25 attended the shoot in October with a hidden camera.
When contacted by Gazette before the shoot, Alphonse described the attraction for local folks wanting to make and watch porn videos.
“Well, the attraction is, of course, pretty girls doing debauched things, and, of course, the money,” Alphonse wrote in an e-mail. “Yes, can definitely be a gold mine, if handled right way. The business is sort of like Wild West, many things go.”
Alphonse is a producer looking to make money in several different ways. Not only would he sell his videos through the Internet, but his ads stated there would be a charge to be in the video. He also charged a fee for anyone who just wanted to sit and watch the shoot.
Several other ads listed pay rates for those interested in performing for the camera. The pay ranged from $75 an hour to as much as $1,000 for a shoot, depending on what the actors were willing to do.
A couple in Tulsa ran an ad selling a DVD they made of themselves for $20.
MONEY SHOT
The money aspect of making home sex movies has a certain appeal for many who enter into that arena. But, there are other reasons an Oklahoma City couple would be interested in having their sex life on display, either for free or a fee.
“If you put a picture of yourself having sex with another person on the Internet, the assumption is other people are going to be watching that and be turned on by it,” Paul said. “That, by extension, has the potential to turn you on because you’re thinking, ‘Somebody desires what I desire,’ and therefore, that makes them even more desirable.”
Paul, who teaches at the same university that is home to the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, said the desirability factor is huge with males consuming and exhibiting porn. Paul called it the “sperm competition theory.”
“The idea is basically guys respond to seeing other males having sex with greater arousal because it’s a competition thing,” he said.
But for one Tulsa woman, it’s all about sex and money.
Going by the name of “Lindsay Hohan,” the recent Broken Arrow High School graduate is doing everything she can to make a name for herself in the world of amateur porn, including a Craigslist ad. The posting describes Hohan as a “20 year old up and cumming pornstar,” who, for a few bucks (well, actually more than a few bucks), would perform for a video project.
“I’m a very sexually oriented person and always have been since I was 14 or 15 years old,” Hohan told Gazette. “Ever since then, I was going to be in the adult industry.”
Now living in Tulsa, Hohan said she had been doing nude modeling when small porn companies around the country saw her pictures on the Internet and began contacting her for video work.
Hohan is into what is known as professional amateur pornography. It involves a very small company, maybe just one person, but with a business model that includes marketing and video production of a higher quality than setting up the camcorder next to the bed. Some businesses may have their own Web site to display their material, or use one of the Internet amateur portals.
“You get your little companies that produce DVDs and they only sell to Kansas or Dallas,” Hohan said. “They’ll have their certain little shops they sell to, but they don’t mass produce. … Everything is done in a rented area or hotel rooms. When you start working with major corporations, everything is done in a studio. That’s what I’m doing now.”
Hohan said she was heading down a more lucrative path, traveling around the country to places like Florida and New Jersey to shoot porn.
“It really varies on what part of the country you’re in,” she said. “If you’re in the Midwest, you get a pretty low rate of pay. If you’re just doing girl-on-girl scenes, you’re going to get paid maybe $150 to $200. But when you go into the boy-girl, scenes are more explicit, you start getting paid around $500 to $600. That’s in the Midwest.
“But in Florida, a boy-girl scene, about three hours, I ended up making around $1,000. That was my cut of it. My agent ended up getting $250.”
Yes, she has an agent.
The Internet world of amateur porn is apparently cutting into the mainstream porn world. According to a 2007 New York Times story, porn video sales and rentals dropped nearly $1 billion between 2005 and 2006. An industry that was once raking in as much as $14 billion a year is starting to see its market share squeezed by the amateurs.
“The barrier to get into the industry is so low: You need a video camera and a couple of people who will have sex,” Paul Fishbein, president of AVN Media Network, told the Times. AVN distributes a porn industry publication.
Indiana University’s Paul said there are three keys to Internet pornography, which he calls the “Triple A engine” : anonymity, affordability and accessibility. Remaining nameless gives people a greater sense of security, while the ease by which to post material makes access no problem. And since the most expensive aspect is the camera itself, there’s not much of a deterrent when an Internet-compatible camera can be purchased at Wal-Mart.
Those are about the only obstacles, since there is no need to worry about finding a market.
“The thing people like about that is it makes them (the couple) seem attainable. It makes them seem realistic that they could actually have sex with a person like that,” Paul said. “It’s easier to put themselves in that role in their mind.”
Although adult videos are being shot in Oklahoma, directors should not expect any Oklahoma Film Commission tax incentives from the state.
“The Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program states what types of films are eligible to receive the credit. Obscene material and child pornography do not qualify for the rebate,” said Leslie Blair, public information officer for the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.
ART OR PROSTITUTION?
However, there is one hurdle Mom and Dad need to be aware of: whether their weekend trip of fun and flesh is OK to post on the Internet. The legal definition of pornography changes from state to state and city to city.
Oklahoma would appear to have stricter pornography and obscenity laws than most states. But there are different ways to interpret those.
“Mere pornography depicting adults in a sexual manner, but which doesn’t qualify as obscenity, is protected by the First Amendment, and it is legal to produce and sell pornography,” Rowland said. “If the pornography goes so far as to meet the legal test of obscenity, then it is illegal to distribute or sell it.”
In most Oklahoma cases, obscenity usually involves showing sexual penetration.
But another question arises on the issue of paying people to perform sex acts in front of the camera: Is this considered art or prostitution?
“I suppose it could technically be viewed that way (as prostitution),” Rowland said. “Since the movie star would be giving his body for sexual intercourse or some other act of lewdness in exchange for money, I suppose it could be prosecuted as prostitution.”
Aside from the legal aspect, amateur adult video-making is not to be taken in a carefree way.
“The danger is people can develop compulsion for using this stuff,” Paul said. “I think it certainly has the potential in relationships. It could lead to problems in relationships when one partner is not into it and one partner is, or they get into it and one partner decides to get out and the other one doesn’t want to.”
Hohan also has warnings about the amateur world of porn.
“If anyone is getting into the industry, I highly, highly advise getting yourself an agent, making sure you don’t go to any shoots that are amateur without bringing somebody with you. If the person says, ‘No, you can’t bring anybody with you,’ then don’t take it. I don’t care how much money they are offering you. Do not take it. Don’t even show up.
“I have been jerked around by so many people claiming this, claiming that. I’ve gone through a lot of ups, a lot of downs, a lot of false promises. A lot of guys who say, ‘Yeah, I want to work with you,’ and the next thing I know, they’re trying to be a sugar daddy to me.” —Scott Cooper
