From belts and headbands to fashionable handbags, accessories that 'pop' are where it's at this fall

Inspired by the subtle tones of grays and browns that are hot this season, adornments of jewelry and other accessories add color, and can make " or break " your fall wardrobe.

"This fall is fabulous, because there is so much freedom now in dressing," said Cindi Shelby, owner of Ruth Meyers in the Nichols Hills Plaza. "With accessories, there's something for everyone."

Cooler temperatures mean layers " and not just for warmth. Wrapped, knotted or simply draped, scarves are "a great and immediate way to change a look," Shelby said. "It can add fashion to the most simple attire."

Top off a basic tee and jeans to go casual, or dress up formal black pants with a colorful scarf for the office. Every color is out there, and in materials like soft cottons and linens, they are comfortable to boot.

Other neck treatments are in, too, said Eddi Morgan, accessories buyer at Balliet's, now located at Classen Curve. Furs, braided Pashmina and oblong scarves range from $15 to $1,500.

"With so many ways to wear a scarf and at all different price points, it's an affordable way to keep things fresh," said Morgan, who has been in the fashion business for more than 18 years.

Mixing and layering also is huge for jewelry. This year, it's not so much about the earrings, but rather a focus on long necklaces and large, layered bracelets to "make a major statement," said Shelby. "Simple earrings with great necklaces and bracelets create the perfect balance."

Long necklaces paired with longer tops and skinny jeans correspond with the elongating look of this season. Try mixing long feminine pearls with heavier, industrial-type chains for a "very modern and fresh look," said Shelby. "Mixing is the most modern way."

Carry with style
Handbags are stepping out with interesting textures and new leather treatments.

"Blistered leather takes the basic black bag and elevates it to something very special," Shelby said. Just like jewelry, "people are loving the burnished metallics and mixtures of metals on handbags, too."

As for color, natural seems to be right up there on the popularity scale with the common black handbag. "It goes with everything, just like black does," said Morgan. "We are also seeing popularity among animal prints and deep wine tones."

How you wear your handbag is usually a woman's personal preference, but gaining more attention are the cross-body bags. And, we're not talking just the masculine messenger ones.

"These stylish bags are adorable and so comfortable," Shelby said. "And, they appeal to all ages."

From fashionable young adults to stylish older ladies, this bag works. Add some panache to your casual Saturday wear, or choose a trendy, studded bag for an elegant evening out on the town.

Better belts
To extend and add fashion to the elongated style this fall, belts are a must.

"Belts are better than I've ever seen them," Morgan said. "And the styles are very versatile, from evening belts to casual."

They are a cost-effective way to update your look from summer and, according to national style experts, "remain at the top of the key fashion accessory list."

Metals like pewter and burnished gold are appearing on belts again, and oversized buckles have been welcomed along with them. Wide, elastic belts and weave patterns continue to be an attractive look this season. And, "because belts are being worn both at the hip and higher on the waist," said Morgan, they are appropriate on most figures.

Flattering footwear
Knee-high socks, skinny jeans and leggings are the inspiration for fall footwear.

"Classic Audrey Hepburn-style ballet flats continue to be a big hit," said Shelby, who carries a variety of colors in her store. "It's a niche that's not about age or size and appeals to so many." Adorable and comfortable " what more could one want in a shoe?

Booties and over-the-knee boots in elegant suede and casual leather are also on the scene as we approach the winter season, so be ready to step it up. Choose from flat, high-heeled or even wedge. As for the office, dainty and pointed kitten heels are great with pencil skirts. Chunky clogs are a fun way to jazz up your casual wear, and as the temperatures drop, fur-lined boots are stylish " and practical.

Simple and fun accessories this season are an affordable way to give your tired clothes a trendy update " and save a few bucks in the process. "Valerie Kramer Davis
