All the food here is done from scratch. Reliable Neff’s has been welcoming customers for a dozen years. For a starter, try the salmon patties, but also ask for the stuffed bell peppers with two sides, which include white gravy, green beans, potato salad and red beans and rice. Neff’s opens at 10:30 a.m., shuts down at 2 p.m. and opens back up from 5 to 8 p.m. for the dinner crowd.

This is one of those great mom-and-pop restaurants where Larry and Lupe Lovin, retired from their regular jobs, followed their dream to open up Lupe’s, and it has been going for 18 years. The entrées offer just the right combination of spices and range from enchiladas, chimichangas, burritos, tacos and, of course, tongue-tingling fajitas. Chips are offered as an appetizer, and make sure to sample the special Lupe’s avocado salad.

At this reliable institution, a typical special appetizer might be a tomato and mozzarella Caprese salad presented with Robiola cheese with balsamic vinaigrette and mixed greens. Or try a sandwich done with ham and bacon, turkey, sliced tomato and crisp lettuce served on a special Tuscan bread. Sliders are half-priced between 4 and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Prohibition Room, under the Gold Dome, not only offers some of the best selections of liquor in this town, but unique cuisine, too. One of its best is on the appetizer list, simply called the bruschetta. Chequers opened more than 24 years ago and offers soups, salads, steaks, chicken and more (like a spinach quiche with salad). But it’s a 6-ounce sirloin steak that has been the very best seller during lunch. It comes with a baked potato, salad and a roll, and the owner, Chris Spiwak, says they sell “a ton” of them, sometimes 400 a week!
