So, apparently the University of Oklahoma has a fishing team " and we don't mean young studs competing to reel in the ladies. According to an article from The Norman Transcript, OU not only has a fishing team, but the duo just won a division event that places them in contention for a regional championship.
"This is amazing," team member Mark Johnson reportedly said. "(Fellow team member) Chip (Porche) and I just had an incredible day, this is great a lake. We caught all our fish using a black angel with a football jig, we only had nine keepers all day, but they were the ones we needed."
Jig "¦ keepers, it turns out fishing involves dancing and Quidditch.
The OU duo headed to Texas for the event, called the National Guard FLW College Fishing Texas Division, and hauled in six bass weighing 34 pounds, eight ounces, according to The Transcript. For their win, they brought home not only dinner, but $10,000 to split between the university and the fishing club.
Whoa. Fishing can net you 10,000 big fish? Where do we sign up?
Fishing in reportedly brutal conditions, the fierce fishermen "were able to maintain their composure," according to The Transcript, and "fish a nearly flawless day" after an early mishap that sent a would-be catch back to the water.
"It was just our day," said Porche of the victory. "We have been fishing together for over two years, and I think the fact that we were able to work as a team made the big difference in our victory. FLW college tournaments are set up so that both anglers have to catch fish; that is different from a lot of other tournaments."
Not to be a Questioning Carp, but what do the team members do in the other tournaments then? Open beer? Keep the caught fish entertained?
Either way, congrats on bagging the big one (wait, did we just screw up our hunting metaphors "¦whatever). Johnson and Porche now head to the Texas Division Regional Championship, where they'll have the chance to place in the top five and move on the national championship.
At this level, they're no longer playing for minnows. The championship winner pulls in $25,000 for their school and a fishing boat decked out in school colors.
