With tornado season drawing near, an educational summit that begins Sunday is aimed at enhancing awareness and preparation for the impending severe weather.
The National Tornado Summit brings together nationally recognized weather experts and insurance professionals to share their expertise. Lectures will address tornado safety practices and communicating more efficient recovery methods within the industry. Everyone from teachers and policymakers to weather enthusiasts are invited.
“This is a serious subject. We Hope that people will take this opportunity,” said John Wiscaver, summit committee co-chairman.
The National Severe Weather Workshop is a new highlight for this second annual summit. Organized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the interactive breakout sessions will focus a variety of specialized topics, such as the impact of social media on tornado warnings and watches.
Last year’s summit attracted more than 800 attendees, and Wiscaver said organizers are anticipating more visitors this year.
“We are excited that this event has taken off and gained as much traction as it has,” he said.
A free, family-friendly Weather Fair on Sunday gives attendees an opportunity to visit with television meteorologists, relive storm chases and check out a tornado simulator.
Tours of the National Weather Center and the NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman will also be available, in addition to a three-day trade show featuring weather resources, services and products.
