Re: “Commentary: Mein campus

Mr. Lang would do the OKC Gazette a favor if he started using facts when he writes his opinions. There is no video proof of anyone chanting "Build the wall" despite hours of footage available of the incident. There is video of the Black Hebrew Israelites shouting slurs and insults to the Covington students. Certain factions of the Black Hebrew Israelites are even recognized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, but we hear nothing from Mr. Lang about what they were saying in almost 2 hours of video.

Nathan Phillips has described himself in a Facebook video as having paperwork indicating he served "in theater" in the Vietnam War and several news outlets have called him a Vietnam veteran, but recent evidence shows he never served outside the United States leading the Washington Post to issue a correction stating that Phillips fought in Vietnam. Still, Mr. Lang refers to Mr. Phillips as Vietnam veteran.

But none of this truth prevents Mr. Lang from repeating lies about what actually happened at the Lincoln Memorial. Mr. Lang appears to be more interested in spreading his own bigotry against Conservatives than in actually addressing the truth in an issue.

And I'm wondering how Nick Sandmann should have responded to Nathan Phillips? What action would have appeased Mr. Lang's bigotry? If Nick Sandmann walked away, he could be accused of disrespecting Nathan Phillips. If he didn't smile, he could be accused of expressing hatred. If he stepped past Nathan Phillips, he could be accused of being aggressive (because just standing still as someone walks up to you pounding a drum is called aggressive now).

Nathan Phillips inserted himself into the crowd of Covington students, he walked up to Nick Sandmann and beat a drum right in the student's face and at no time was Phillip's 'retreat' barred by anyone other than the people with Phillip's who were filming the event in order (I suppose) to post the encounter on social media and gin up more hatred against a group of people different than themselves.

If Mr. Lang wants to fight bigotry and hatred, he might want to look at the actual actions of the other two groups involved in the Lincoln Memorial encounter and then address that.
