Actor Jeff Daniels moonlights as acoustic guitarist 

It's easy to scoop all actor-turned-musicians and dump them into the same bin. After all, attempts by the likes of Steven Seagal and Keanu Reeves don't exactly inspire confidence in those who take a musical tangent from Hollywood.

But actor Jeff Daniels, who is playing an acoustic show Saturday night at the Sooner Theatre in Norman, has a sense of humor about music, and knows audiences expect to see "Harry" from "Dumb & Dumber" play some silly songs.

"That's the elephant in the room, and I don't pretend to ignore it at all," Daniels said. "The audience wants to have a good time and I don't demand you take me seriously."

SONGWRITING
Daniels said he has been playing the guitar and writing songs since picking up a Guild D40 in the Seventies, which he used to fill downtime between movie takes and film projects. What playing the guitar helped him discover was a love of writing. He said the confidence inspired by home songwriting helped him move beyond acting into writing and directing for film and stage.

"It all comes from the same place," he said, "and at the time, I didn't know there was a writer in me."

Daniels said he enjoys disarming audiences with funny, folksy songs off his albums, like "If William Shatner Can, I Can Too," and "You Can Drink an Ugly Girl Pretty." He feeds off the energy of the crowd and tailors his performance to that.
