After years of frustration, Red Sox making up for lost time

DENVER " I could get used to this World Series champions stuff. It's seriously cool.

Used to be, I began each spring with renewed optimism, maintained high hopes through the dog days of summer and eventually got some sort of reality check about mid-September. That's usually about the time my Boston Red Sox went into their annual late-season slide.

By the time October arrived, hope had been replaced with disappointment and any postseason plans were put on hold, again.

Every time the Red Sox suffered a heartbreaking setback, I told myself it was simply a matter of time before they eventually broke through to ease not only my suffering, but that of the entire Red Sox Nation.

Finally, in 2004, it happened. The Red Sox exorcised 86 years worth of Yankee demons by finishing off a World Series sweep of St. Louis.

A little more than a month prior to my 45th birthday, I celebrated as the Red Sox were crowned world champions. Not exactly the time frame I was hoping for as a second-grader all those years ago.

But, hey, the curse was over! Better late than never. Right?

Even better was the fact that when the Red Sox captured their second World Series title in four years over the weekend, I was in Denver to help revel in all of the magic and excitement.

Making the trip even more special was the chance to actually attend my first World Series game and see the Sox take a 3-0 series lead over the Colorado Rockies.

Did I mention "magic?" "Jay C. Upchurch
