AIDS Walk Oklahoma City, Inc. hosts its annual walk and 5K run 2 p.m. Sunday to raise funds for HIV/AIDS education and awareness.

All of the proceeds from the event " as well as other fundraisers hosted by the nonprofit " are directed back into the community, said John Greer, organization president.

HIV/AIDS nonprofit organizations in the metro are able to apply to the group for grants in order to receive aid. Past participating programs include Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, Guiding Right Inc. and RAIN Oklahoma. The walk has raised more than $450,000 since its founding in 1998.

As new medications are produced that enable those with HIV/AIDS to live longer lives, government funding for these agencies and programs is cut annually, Greer said " an issue that's another a driving force behind the efforts of the AIDS Walk.

"In our community, we have to do what we can to fight this disease," he said. "We have to remember that we are still here fighting this fight. That's what it's all about."

Same-day registration for the walk begins at 12:30 p.m. at Sonic Plaza in Bricktown. Participants can register as individuals or teams. Registration for the 5K is $20 in advance; $25 on race day. Same-day registration for the 5K starts at 11 a.m. for the 12:30 p.m. race.
