Alt-country siren Crain not as mean as she sounds

Samantha Crain is a unique alt-country siren in the metro's music scene. She just turned 21, but her youthful face and stature make her look a decade younger, all of which belies the elegant heartache that seeps out of her songs and voice.

"People who've heard me before they've seen me say they thought I'd be bigger and meaner-looking," Crain said. "When people come to my show, I get a lot of, 'I didn't know what I expected you to sound like, but that wasn't what I expected.'"

TOURING
The Shawnee singer/songwriter has been winning fans one show at a time with her rich lyricism, emotive storytelling and warm and expressive vocals. She honed her songwriting at a musician's colony in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., before returning to tour with a friend.

She's picked up a full band from Missouri called The Midnight Shivers and will be kicking off a fall tour with a show Thursday at LiT Lounge and another on Sunday at The Conservatory.

Crain's two-month tour will take her through much of the Midwest and bring her country charm back to where she cut her musical teeth, in Massachusetts. "Charles Martin
