Answer This!

Answer: “Answer This,” a harmless, but forgettable romantic comedy not worthy of the exclamation point in its title.

Caterpillar-eyebrowed Christopher Gorham (TV’s “Covert Affairs”) plays Paul Tarson, a TA of a “Bible as Literature” college class, and son of the esteemed English professor Dr. Elliot Tarson (Ralph Williams, in his first feature). Living in his father’s shadow and working on his doctoral dissertation, Paul feels stuck.

His only escape is participating in the aforementioned trivia tourney, administered by Chris Parnell (TV’s “Suburgatory”), until he meets free-spirited freshman Naomi (Arielle Kebbel, “Vampires Suck”), who teaches him the joys of skipping class to jump in an inflatable castle, attending football games, swimming in your underwear, sex in the library — that sort of thing. The only problem: She’s one of his students.

While debuting writer/director Christopher Farah has only a little to be embarrassed about here (a cutaway of Gorham basking in the glow of revealing his dissertation to his class being one), he’s also not at the top of his game. For one thing, the film has one too many storylines; what should be — and sure feels like — the end is followed by 20 more minutes.

Farah gets to work with some appealing leads, but also a script below the status of “something special,” and there’s not much they can do to improve it. Ultimately, “Answer This!” is as trivial as its bar-game subject. —Rod Lott
