Art museum displays two new collections

anding collections, and it's really a rare opportunity to see both works exhibited on the scale that we're showing them," said Alison Amick, associate curator. "To celebrate the centennial, we're pulling out our best and trying to make the public aware of these great treasures we have."

Both exhibitions "? "Breaking the Mold: Selections from the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, 1961-1968" and "Shining Spirit: Westheimer Family Collection" "? will be shown through Aug. 19.

'BREAKING THE MOLD'
On the ground floor is "Breaking the Mold," containing 60 works from what Amick said was one of the first galleries of contemporary art.

"It includes many of the museum's key pieces," Amick said. "It really captures a variety of styles and the trends that were developing during the Sixties, at the end of abstract expressionism and all the styles that came out of it: minimalism, pop and so forth."

'SHINING SPIRIT'
Taking up the third floor is "Shining Spirit," a bequest to the museum with approximately 60 works donated by the late Jerome M. Westheimer Sr.

Amick said this collection is comprised of "all shapes and sizes "? everything from contemporary American realism to optical art."

"It includes a number of real audience favorites," she said. "It's truly a phenomenal private collection that we're now lucky to have."
