Artist of the Quarantine: April Dawes

"Painting has always been a place of refuge for me. It’s how I center myself, quiet my mind and escape from the rest of the world," April Dawes said. "I have never been more grateful for this escape than during the quarantine. Although I struggled to find motivation and lacked focus in the first few weeks, once I got myself into the studio, I felt total freedom. I have always been fascinated by the revealing, narrative qualities of the human face and figure, and they are my favorite subjects to paint (next to clouds, which I find extremely expressive as well). In my paintings, I attempt to capture fleeting expression and then delve deeper, often imagining the landscapes that exist beyond the surface."
