Artist of the Quarantine: Freakin Silva aka Steven Silva

"Old cartoons are dark, man. I like the satire of it; it’s not serious. And if it is serious, you can put it in this cartoon wrapper. People buy mousetraps, but they love Mickey," Freakin Silva, aka Steven Silva, said. "My whole drawing style had to change when I went digital. Couldn’t get the same expressive lines with my finger on a trackpad and pirated software. Medium is message. Bold, designed lines translated well to cartoons. Replicating offset pops of color from old print methods provided energy to things that otherwise feel rigid. I love the energy of test prints, for instance, or painters’ mixing palettes. Quarantine is accidentally easy for me; my routines haven’t changed much. But I hope Animal Crossing and bikes are helping the harder hit."
