Arts Council of Oklahoma City's 'Out of the Box' series stages concerts on the streets of Bricktown

Street corners in downtown Oklahoma City are more than slabs of concrete and stoplights "? they're potential stages.

"Out of the Box" is a program organized the Arts Council of Oklahoma City that includes free outdoor performances throughout Bricktown and downtown, by more than 50 individuals and groups, ranging from blues musicians to jugglers and clown troupes. Passersby can expect to see entertainment from a range of genres including variety acts, visual art demonstrations and musical performances.

"We really run the gamut," said program director Gilbert Magdaleno. "We have just about any type of visual performance a person can think of."

Since the program's start in 2005, the goal has been to enhance the cultural atmosphere of the downtown area. Artist undergo a selection process in order to ensure a quality, family-friendly performance.

This month's roster includes blues, jazz and R&B performer Ross Plunkett, who performs 5-7 p.m. Friday in Bricktown. The shows continue Oct. 23 with acoustic guitarist Aaron Newman and magician Steve Crawford performing in Automobile Alley. Singer/songwriter Justin Witte (pictured above) performs Oct. 27 in downtown.
