Baby-item drive takes Bedlam theme

Infant Crisis Services is using the state’s most heated football game to launch this year’s Bedlam for Babies fundraiser. When people drop off their donations, they can designate them to go under the University of Oklahoma category or the Oklahoma State University category; the school with the most donations wins bragging rights.

Last year’s Bedlam for Babies raised about 3,100 pounds of needed materials for babies; this year, the group hopes to surpass 5,000 pounds.

The 2010 drive was intended for businesses or companies to participate by putting drop boxes in their buildings. This year, the competition has become more accessible, because anyone can drop off donations at the Infant Crisis Service headquarters, 4224 N. Lincoln.

“We started this last year as more of a competition people could do in their businesses, but then we thought, ‘Let’s get everyone involved,’” said Amy Spielberger, Infant Crisis Services spokeswoman.

The most-needed baby essentials are bottles, diapers, wipes and formula, but Spielberger said they are hoping to receive some clothing and coats as well.

“I really think that Bedlam is something everyone in the state can get on board with,” Spielberger said. “In this case, it’s a competition where everyone wins.”

Donations will be accepted until the OU-OSU football game, Dec. 3.
