Beautification Station Cruisin' OKC travels across metro

All aboard the Beautification Station, which just might stop at a neighborhood near you on Saturday.

Beautification Station Cruisin' OKC is a free bus tour that stops in neighborhood sites around Oklahoma City to show off landscaping and beautification projects in parks and near homes, said Nicki Largent, office manager for OKC Beautiful.

The tour is in its third year and has become very popular with metro residents who are interested in making their neighborhood a better place, she said. This year, four charter buses will drive attendees from 'hood to 'hood.

"We want to incorporate pride in Oklahoma City. It's possible for anyone to do this," Largent said.

ON DISPLAY
The neighborhoods on display are picked because they're the best examples of efforts to beautify or improve their space. She said beautifying a neighborhood or a park can make tourists want to come back, and make citizens happy they live in Oklahoma City.

Chesapeake Energy will provide lunch at its One Grand building, while experts talk about different ways to start a neighborhood beautification project, Largent said. Landscapers will discuss what plants do well in Oklahoma and how to build an irrigation system. Community foundations will tell tour takers how to find and apply for grants, and how to budget the projects.

"I'm really amazed at how many people enjoy this event," she said. "It's just a fun day."

The Beautification Station Cruisin' OKC tour and luncheon is free, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Space is limited. For more information or to register, call 525-8822. "Jamie Birdwell
