The Children's Zoo is back and updated for a younger generation. The Oklahoma City Zoo, 2101 N.E. 50th, now has a brand-new way for kids to get back to nature.

The addition has more than two acres of open space that gives kids room to run around, and new attractions to help them use their senses to learn about nature. The zoo redesigned the kids' section to give children more sensory opportunities and exploring, said spokeswoman Candice Rennels.

"When you walk into the Children's Zoo, you will find a lot of open spaces and not a lot of signs telling kids what to do, but instead we just want them to go in and have their own experiences," she said. "We want them to turn over rocks and see what is underneath. We want them to go through the tunnels we have built "¦ to get the kids connected."

Some of the new features include a barnyard petting zoo, a climbing structure for children to mimic the monkeys the zoo acquired for the Children's Zoo, spray parks and an aviary where kids can watch birds fly around them. While children are allowed to run free in the kids' area, a seating area is available for parents and less-energetic family members.

"Parents really enjoy (the Children's Zoo) and are very happy to see that we (built a new one) and to see all the new additions of animals we have in there," Rennels said.

Adult admission is $7, seniors and kids 3-11 are $4, and children under 2 are free. For more information, call 424-3344 or visit www.okczoo.com. "LeighAnne Manwarren
