Bunches of brunches

Too late for breakfast but just shy of lunch, brunch beautifully splits the difference in the Oklahoma City food scene.

If brunch were an Olympic sport, it would be the biathlon. It mixes marathon meals with the excitement of fighting a crowd the same way the biathlon mixes the endurance of cross-country skiing and the thrill of rifle shooting. OK; maybe that’s a stretch, but our brunch guide will help you have a plan for weekend brunch adventures and avoid a hungover wait in line.

Fancy

Cheever’s Cafe is the reigning people’s champion as the winner for best brunch in last year’s Oklahoma Gazette Best of OKC issue. Its famous chicken-fried steak remains on the brunch menu, but it can also be had with the cowgirl Benedict ($16), which is joined by such concoctions as shrimp and grits with Sriracha-honey butter ($17) and French toast bread pudding ($12).
Packard’s New American Kitchen is one of the city’s best, but its dinner menu has a few entrees over $25. Its brunch menu is a slightly more accessible version of the menu with such playful items as crunch-berry French toast (yes, with Cap’n Crunch) or the breakfast board with praline bacon, deviled eggs, sliced tomatoes, burrata cheese, avocado, toast and apple butter.

Chicken and waffles at Hatch

Boozy

It’s not hard to see the success of Hatch when you see the line out the door of its Broadway Avenue location. It recently earned recognition from Food Network for having the best pancakes in the state, made with its sweet cream batter. Its blueberry streusel pancakes are some of the most popular. It also offers three types of bloody marys and mimosas in addition to cocktails, wine, beer and six types of spiked coffee cocktails.
Hatch opened its second location at Chisholm Creek in early March at 1320 Pawnee Drive. It isn’t the only brunch destination that has expanded in 2018. Sunnyside Diner also opened a second location at 824 SW 89th St.

Avocado toast at Neighborhood JA.M.

Relaxed

The Hal Smith restaurant group concept Neighborhood JA.M. opened its Edmond location in the second half of 2017, and the concept has proven so successful that a second location will open in Norman at 102 W. Main St. in June.
Neighborhood JA.M. takes its name seriously. Biscuits are served with a variety of jams and butters. The restaurant takes familiar concept like avocado toast and pancakes and has fun with it. Pineapple bourbon pancakes are among its most popular dishes.
The city has welcomed a pair of biscuit-themed restaurants in recent weeks: HunnyBunny Biscuit Co., from the people behind Packard’s, and Buttermilk, the brainchild of Waffle Champion’s Todd Woodruff.
Norman’s syrup. expanded to Oklahoma City’s 23rd Street with long lines and fanfare, while The Press strengthened the portfolio of Hungry Town (The Mule, Anchor Down) in the Plaza District.

Tuscan Anne Benedict at Hatch

Something different

Brunch can take a lot of different forms beyond the traditional eggs Benedict or chicken and waffles.
Whether it is a weekend eating dim sum at Grand House, indulging in La Brasa’s signature marinated chicken with waffles or The Loaded Bowl’s version of its vegan cashew mac that’s topped with tofu scramble, lentil chorizo and sage gravy, there are a lot of options.
The Wedge Pizzeria offers five brunch pies, including the hangover pizza, which tops marinara, mozzarella, sausage, pancetta and roasted peanuts with eggs.
