Caucus votes for Cargill to retain speaker post

State Speaker of the House Lance Cargill staved off a challenge and was nominated to repeat as speaker at his party's retreat Tuesday morning. Meeting at the Noble Foundation in Ardmore, the Republican Caucus of the state House voted between Cargill and Rep. John Wright of Broken Arrow for the speakership beginning in 2009.

A few hours after the vote, both Cargill and Wright emerged from the meeting to speak with reporters.

"I want to express how grateful I am to the caucus for the vote today," Cargill said, with his challenger standing beside him. "I want to commend Rep. Wright. He is a valuable member of our caucus."

REFORM
Wright announced last week he was running for the position to push forward legislative reform. His announcement came after it was revealed the state Ethics Commission is investigating Republican campaign donations and Cargill's involvement with the donations.
After the caucus vote, Wright told reporters he will work with the speaker for reform.

"The caucus rules call for an orderly process. ... That was done today," Wright said. "They have entrusted Speaker Cargill. The caucus is unified."

Cargill was first elected speaker last year after Republicans retained their majority in the House. If the GOP stays in the majority after next year's election, Cargill will be the party's nominee for speaker. "Scott Cooper
