Chicago glam band Kill Hannah wins fans with earnest alt-rock songs

Grateful Dead has Deadheads, Kiss has its Army, The Cure has shoegazers, and glam rockers Kill Hannah are steadily growing its own base of diehards.

"They give you security against any possible collapse of the music industry because they are there for you. They believe in you," said lead singer Mat Devine.

Kill Hannah will play with The Medic Droid, Innerpartysystem and The White Tie Affair at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 at Bricktown Ballroom, 103 E. California. Tickets are $15.

Kill Hannah's decadent take on the androgynous days of hair metal is mixed with softhearted, lamenting lyrics, and fired with modern rock's crunching guitars and blasting drums. Devine sings about women with lips like morphine, pines for the glorious tragedy and excesses of the Kennedys, and captures the desperate and dangerous world of young love. The band's moniker is actually a reference to Devine's intense, damaging and ultimately unsustainable relationship with an ex-girlfriend named Hannah.

The band is touring to support "Hope for the Hopeless," a collection of B-sides and songs that are new or didn't make it onto previous albums. The six-piece is in the process of moving from Atlantic Records to Roadrunner Records, and has spent the contract-free interim releasing an album independently.

"It used to be a badge of honor to have these big labels doing everything for you, but now it's almost embarrassing, and they usually don't know what they are doing, anyway," Devine said.

The process of carefully handling the band's business and cultivating its image prevents the members from losing touch with its devoted fan base. Devine began scrawling a black stripe under his eye as an homage to various other musicians who sported the same mark. When going to shows, both abroad and overseas, he'll see lines of fans bearing the stripe, or some other embellished version. "Charles Martin
