Chicken-Fried News: Be wary of Rep. Bennett

In classic Oklahoma Islamophobia fashion, Rep. John Bennett, R-Sallisaw, took to Facebook last week to offer a word of warning to his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

“The Quran clearly states that non-Muslims should be killed,” Bennett wrote. “Be wary of individuals who claim to be Muslim American, be especially wary if you’re Christian.”

Bennett stood by his words following criticism from a local Islamic advocacy group, and the chairman of the state GOP said he saw nothing wrong with those words.

Bennett was probably referencing the part of the Quran that says, “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the lord must be destroyed,” and, “Whoever would not seek the lord ... should be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.” Actually, those aren’t verses from the Quran at all. Those are verses from Exodus 22 and 2 Chronicles 15 in the Christian Bible. Maybe we all should be wary of Bennett?
