Chicken-Fried News: Konawa quitters

Konawa just sounds like a town from the Wild West, so residents were probably thrilled when the majority of the town’s police force resigned at a city council meeting a few weeks ago.

“Yippe-ki-ya!” the townsfolk probably said, firing guns willy-nilly into the air. Oh wait. That’s what got two of their officers suspended early last month. They were arrested by the Pontotoc County sheriff’s department for firing their service weapons for fun while driving down country roads.

Already down those two officers, the Konawa Police Department lost five more officers and the chief of police at the city council meeting.

Sgt. Elijah Snider, who has since rejoined the department, said the officers who resigned did so because of mismanagement and interference from the mayor, city council and former chief.

In all, four of the five resigned officers are back in place and a new police chief has been installed.

But if they’re not even going to be allowed to fire off their guns for fun on country roads, who knows how long they’ll stick around.
