Those opposed to same-sex marriage continue to suffer a tough year. Following the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2014, a host of anti-LGBT bills have died in the Legislature.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the fair-minded legislators who refused to allow it — and several other hate-filled bills — to even get a vote on the house floor,” Freedom Oklahoma Executive Director Troy Stevenson said about House Bill 1598 and several other proposed bills.

It’s possible state lawmakers are just now realizing they have more important things to do than be the love police.

Maybe even a few are coming around to the fact that same-sex couples deserve rights and fair treatment, a concept that has been a tough sell in Oklahoma for many years.

Oklahoma’s conservative statehouse doesn’t appear likely to roll out the welcome mat for the LGBT community anytime soon, but, in this instance, we’ve decided that legislative apathy is a step forward.

So here’s to the statehouse simply not caring! We are making progress.
