The headline is breathless and excited: “Millennials flocking to smaller cities!” And that’s good news for places just like Oklahoma City and Tulsa, our state’s two largest “smaller cities.”
The number of millennials moving here rose 0.5 percent between 2000 and 2014, making the age group 22.7 percent of the city’s population, according to ConsumerAffairs, a for-profit consumer advocacy group based in Nevada. Tulsa lost 0.1 percent of its millennials, making them just 20.2 percent of that city’s population.
For comparison, Corvalis, Oregon’s metropolitan area expanded 2.4 percent to make the age group 29.4 percent of its population. Iowa City, Iowa, fell 5.20 percent to make the group 28.2 percent of its population.
That’s a whole lot of numbers without a whole lot to say, except “droves” of millennials — approximately 20 to 30 percent of any “smaller city” population — are moving around the nation — sorta like a bunch of wayward college backpackers on summer break. Get off our lawn. Or stay awhile. Whatever.
