An oil company that wants to drill for gas on the Lake Hefner Reservation in Oklahoma City will host a public meeting with the city next week to discuss its plans.
In a letter from Marsha Slaughter, utilities director of the city, it was announced that on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. the city will hold an information session to discuss the project.
“Representatives from Pedestal Oil Company, Inc., will present an overview of the project and protective measures that will be taken,” Slaughter wrote.
In a Facebook post Saturday, Ward 2 Councilman Ed Shadid urged the public to attend and was critical of the timing of the meeting.
“With less than a week’s notice, a public meeting will be held in which Pedestal Oil Co. will announce their plans for oil and gas drilling, including directional drilling and fracking, immediately adjacent to Lake Hefner,” Shadid said. “Three years ago nearly 100 people came to a community meeting to protest.
Shadid’s Facebook post had already been shared over 180 times within five hours and there were dozens of comments from citizens who said they were concerned with the idea of fracking and drilling so close to the lake.
The public meeting will be held at the Will Rogers Conservatory at 3400 NW 36th St.
