Cornett is good for downtown

We were both in our mid 20s and looking for activities to do downtown after hours. I have vivid memories of visiting the Bricktown area. Many of the buildings were empty, and most businesses closed early. We had very few entertainment and dining options.

There was no doubt that the city was living in the shadow of its glory days. Even though the city had encountered difficult times in the ’80s and ’90s, there was an unmistakable calmness and optimism of better days ahead.

Under the leadership of Mayor Mick Cornett, Oklahoma City has experienced strong economic growth and a transformation worthy of national and international acclaim.

While the nation was going through a recession, Oklahoma City experienced the lowest unemployment rate. Oklahoma City welcomed both small and large corporations and created over 70,000 jobs. In 2008, Oklahoma City became a big-league city by bringing in the Thunder professional basketball team.

The downtown area, with the completion of the canal, is livelier and has become a tourist destination offering fine dining, great entertainment and shopping.

Cornett also has focused on the education of our children. Since implementing MAPS for Kids, Cornett has ensured that our children have the best learning facilities by keeping the promise to renovate and rebuild outdated schools in the Oklahoma City Public Schools District.

We’ve also seen great improvement in the infrastructure of our city. We have better highways and roads that make it safer and easier to navigate through the city.

The culture and the people of Oklahoma have made it easy to call Oklahoma City our home. My husband and I are small business owners, and we now have three children who were born in this great city. As they get older, we will remind them that their quality of life has improved thanks to visionaries and leaders like Cornett.

I want to remind Oklahomans that our voice and vote do matter. We must think of our children’s future by electing leaders who are focused on education, economy and our individual liberties.

There’s much more to be done, and that’s why I’m supporting Cornett for mayor. He has been good for our family and for Oklahoma City.

In order to continue the growth and momentum, we need an experienced leader who will concentrate on the economy and stronger neighborhoods and continue to improve the quality of life for all Oklahomans. As the Thunder motto says, “Rise Together,” let’s continue to rise together by electing Mayor Mick Cornett on March 4.
