Council member Simank resigns

After 13 years representing the inner part of the city, Ann Simank resigned today from the Oklahoma City Council.

"We live in the best city in the nation," Simank told a crowd of city employees, elected officials and members of the media during an afternoon press conference.

Simank was sworn in as a council member on March 21, 1995, just days before the April 19 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, which stood within her Ward 6 district.

REMEMBRANCE
Simank reminisced about helping the MAPS project become a reality and shoveling the first dirt after Oklahoma City voters approved the measure.

"I have been able to watch (the city) come back and revitalize," she said.

The longest serving member of the current city council, Simank is resigning due to her son's acceptance into the Oklahoma City Fire Training Academy's class of 2008. The city's charter prohibits the mayor and city council members from holding office when a relative is employed by the city.

Simank touted her efforts to aid the city's homeless and mental health population while on the city council, having served as chair of the Social Services committee during her tenure. She said she will continue to be an advocate for the mental health needs of the city, and also plans to be a frequent volunteer.

Her resignation will take effect on Friday. Citizens of Ward 6 interested in running for the seat can apply between Sept. 15 and 17. The election will be held on Nov. 4 with a runoff date of Dec. 9. "Scott Cooper
