Dances from around the world featured at two-day showcase

One need not take three weeks' vacation and travel the world to see Irish step dancers, Turkish gypsy dancers and Arabic belly dancers. All can be seen this weekend, in the comfort of our own state, from the seats at Omniplex Science Museum, 2100 N.E. 52nd.

"Dances of Passion: A Journey Around the World Through Dance" is a centennial event celebrating the worldwide cultures that now comprise the personality of Oklahoma. It is hosted by Aalim Studios and sponsored in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council.

"We wanted to showcase how diverse the people of our state are," said Soraya Al Musri, director of Aalim Studios, in a press release. "Through dance, we hope to show how talented and creative the people of Oklahoma are, and that although we are all Oklahomans, our cultures add their own unique flavor to our state."

LINEUP
With a bigger lineup for the centennial, "Dances of Passion" "? now in its third year "? will feature dances from:
" the Middle East,
" Mexico,
" Spain,
" Japan,
" Africa,
" China and
" many more.

"These are our neighbors, our fellow residents of Oklahoma. The more we understand each other's cultures, the better we can get along and work together to make our state great," said Heide Brandes, publicity chair for Aalim Studios. "Dance is a wonderful way to do that, because it's not only entertaining, it's educational."

Showtimes are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday night and tickets are $15. For more information, call 844-0304.
