Dear Dad

It’s that special day set aside to honor the exemplary men in your life.

Father’s Day is always a sneaky holiday to me. It’s not that far after Mother’s Day, but it’s far enough that it feels like the Fourth of July will be the next thing on your radar.

But, hey, now that you’ve been reminded, what to do for the man who scared away loser boyfriends, taught you to change a tire and always has the best advice in any situation? It’s a tricky one, for sure.

However, my dad keeps a pretty gnarly beard. He always can use some tools to wrangle his facial hair.

Carwin’s Shave Shop (5710 N. Classen Blvd.; 607-1197) offers an impressive array of men’s grooming products, like brushes and shaving creams. The shop sells leather bags, wine sets and shaving kits.

Better yet, pick him up a gift certificate so he can go in and enjoy an old-fashioned, straight-razor shave or beard trim.

“The best gift is a father/son trip to the barber shop for shaves. It is always a great time for everyone,” said Chuck Naifeh, barber and shop manager. “I love it when three generations of men come in for shaves.”

If your dad is handy in the kitchen — or trying to cultivate a new hobby — consider The International Pantry (1618 W. Lindsey, Norman; 360-0765). Pick up all the barbecue accoutrements he could ever need, or possibly a set of carving knives.

Maybe quality time seems like the best gift you could give Pop. Plan an activity together, and consider signing up for cooking classes at the Pantry. Learn to prepare crêpe batter and how to break down an entire chicken for cooking.

Has it been a while since dear old Dad updated his dress-up attire? Does he still have that Tabasco tie and lime-green sportcoat?

Every fella needs at least one well-tailored suit for fancy events. Steven Giles (5850 N. Classen Blvd.; 607- 4633) offers custom fittings, and no detail is left unattended.

After all that shopping, stop by Tobacco Exchange (2836 N.W. 63rd; 843-1688) and grab a few cigars or some shisha and enjoy a relaxing evening on the patio with the gentlemen in your life.

Let’s shop, OKC!
