Warm-drink sipping, cold-weather loving, holiday music-listening into them.
Probably my favorite part, if I were forced to list only one thing other than cooler temps, would be the decorating.
Transforming living spaces that are normally calm and serene into fantastical displays of pine-cone-scented garland, complete with sparkly lights, is magical to me. If the weather cooperates and delivers a blanket of snow, then the euphoria is almost too much.
And every year, at the close of a jolly and festive season whether it snows or not a bout of post-holiday depression invariably sets in.
Ive tried leaving up the Christmas tree deep into January, but its not the same. Ive tried post-Xmas baking and taking my own sweet time removing decor. It just prolongs the sorrow.
Ive found no other way to combat the anguish other than a complete cleanup of all things holiday on Jan. 1, along with a little bit of retail therapy.
Fortunately, shops work with me on the latter by discounting their seasonal items.
Its more fun than packing away all the festivity, anyway. Really, were helping each other. And isnt that the whole point of a season thats merry and bright in the first place?
At The Tulip Tree (360 24th N.W.; 329-1060) in Norman, the staff has gotten into the holiday spirit all throughout December. Find it on Facebook for promotions on things like Drake Designs pottery and holiday-themed frames. Expect special after-Christmas sales that will last only for a few days, too.
Another holiday shopping option is Party Galaxy (300 N. MacArthur Blvd; 604-5959). With one of the biggest selections when it comes to all things party, locations are all over the city, and will run various percentages off holiday and seasonal goodies.
The savings will be offered for a limited time after Christmas, so get there early for the top picks. Who doesnt want snowmen plates and napkins to use at parties?
Another fun place to check out, A Date with Iris (4201 N. Western; 604-5959) is offering 50 percent off all holiday decor, and the sale will continue for a week.
Its not too early to start thinking about Valentines Day gifts, either. A Date with Iris a great spot to pick up a gift for those January and February birthdays.
Go ahead and use shopping as a coping mechanism for post-holiday grief. Restock those festive plastic buckets with new decorations, and have a happy New Year. Lets shop, OKC!
