Susan Briante will be reading from and discussing her book, Defacing the Monument, winner of the Poetry Foundation’s Pegasus Award for Poetry, in Tyrrell Hall at The University of Tulsa.
Briante’s book unspools a series of lyric essays integrating legal documents, maps, exercise, photographs, and archival evidence, as she explores the potential of poetry to respond to important social issues. She writes about Operation Streamline, a U.S. government initiative that has criminally prosecuted undocumented immigrants in mass trials of up to 80 people at a time.
