Thursday-Saturday, ongoing
Downtown Edmond

During its annual "Dickens of a Christmas" program, downtown Edmond is lit up with electric lights and holiday cheer as the winter season descends.

Over the years, the event has grown from one night of holiday festivities with the surrounding community, to multiple weekends of events and increased participants, said Karen Morton, event director.

"This 'Dickens of a Christmas' is going to be our best one yet," she said.

Through Christmas Day, the agenda includes charity events and free trolley rides. With the assistance of participants, donated trees and wreaths will be on display as part of the inaugural "Festival of the Trees."

Other activities include historic home tours, live musical performances by traveling carolers, and a silent auction to benefit the Edmond Senior Center Meal Program, from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Much of the programming of "Dickens of a Christmas" is centered upon community building and celebrating the holidays in a way that is far removed from the commercialism of the holiday, Morton said.

"Our slowed-down pace helps to get rid of the hectic qualities of the holiday season and really allow people to enjoy their Christmas better," she said.

The festivities begin 6 p.m. Thursday with the tree lighting ceremony, led by Mayor Patrice Douglas, and selections from Edmond's Children Choir, at Shannon Miller Park on Main and Boulevard. The annual Parade of Lights follows at 6:45 p.m. with bands, vintage cars and a visit from Santa.
