Elvis Presley' Viva Elvis: The Album

That Elvis Presley, he sure is a workhorse! Some three decades and then some following his death, he's the subject of "Viva Elvis," a Cirque du Soleil stage show that brings his music ... well, if not into the 21st century, then certainly to new heights of spectacle.

This 12-tracker is the companion album, and the concept utilizes Elvis' actual voice on more modern renditions of a smattering of his greatest hits, spread out among three producers. While not always your favorite choices, they represent a wide swath of the King's genre-hopping ways over his brilliant career: virginal pop ("Blue Suede Shoes"), puppy-dog ballads ("Love Me Tender"), amphetamine-tempo pomp and circumstance ("Burning Love").

Remember Junkie XL's remix of "A Little Less Conversation" that became the theme to NBC's "Las Vegas"? The effect is somewhat reminiscent of that, although a little less big-beat. The very best is saved for last, with superstar producer Brendan O'Brien's power-ballad mix of "Suspicious Minds." I must've played it two dozen times, and really loud. Don't tell the wife.
