For 18 years, an artist bound to the corporate world sat confined to an office cubicle that would come to represent so much more than just another day on the job.

Local sculptor Eric Wright, a self-proclaimed introspective guy, began working on his upcoming show, "Manifestations," about 15 years ago. He just didn't know it at the time.

"I was really unhappy with that cubicle," Wright said. "The structure of a cube has come to represent the prison that we put ourselves in."

That metaphorical prison serves as the gatekeeper of emotions and memories that, if left unaddressed, begin to manifest within the host. The exhibit uses the artist's observations of this process "? both of himself and others "? to portray the physical toll it takes.

"I am trying to look beyond the public facade that people have and look behind them into what makes that person the way they are," Wright said.

The exhibit includes eight pieces, all of which are concrete cubes ranging in size up to a cubic foot. One piece, "Up and Away," boasts a latch door with a ladder descending from it. Wright said this represents the feeling of entrapment and embodies a general tone of escapism.

"Manifestations" debuts Friday at a.k.a. Gallery, 3001 Paseo, during the Paseo District's First Friday Gallery Walk, from 6 to 10 p.m.
