As soccer kicks back into gear in the metro area, a native Oklahoman brings top-flight European-style soccer training to Oklahoma City. John Nash, CEO of Sporting Global, a sports consulting agency, partners with one of the world’s most famous and honored football clubs, FC Barcelona, to teach the team’s methodology to children and teens from ages 6 to 18.

“The club is really honored to come to Oklahoma,” Nash said. “We feel it will be a great opportunity for the state.”

FC Barcelona, located in Spain’s second most populous city, is one of the world’s most supported sports teams. The club plays in the Primera División of La Liga, the top division of Spain’s famous soccer league. FC Barcelona has earned 23 league championships, second only to arch rival Real Madrid C.F.’s 32 titles. The club is home to the one of the world’s most famous athletes, Lionel Messi, who some say is the greatest soccer player of all time.

Teaching technique

The aim of FCBEscola Soccer Camp is to teach the training and techniques of the club’s renowned La Masia academy, which has produced the likes of soccer stars such as Messi, Andrés Iniesta and Gerard Piqué.

“We’ll get into more advanced team play concepts and small, private play concepts than other developmental programs in the United States currently do,” Nash said.

The program will teach players how to create space between themselves and opponents and teammates and in-depth defending and passing structure, among other aspects of the game.

To teach the method, the club brings in coaches with an abundance of experience. The most famous is Pablo Ibáñez. The center back is known for his time spent with Atlético de Madrid and the Spanish national football team.

“At this stage, young players play for passion and the love of the game and the sport is very pure,” Ibáñez said. “I want to pass on what I learned in my playing career to the young players in camp and make a positive impact in their development. Also, the FC Barcelona methodology is one of the best in the history of the game, and I am proud to join the camp staff.”

The camp runs 9 a.m-3 p.m. June 13-17. Tuition is $455. If students want provided lunches, there is an extra $35 charge. Each participant receives a jersey, shorts and socks.

At the end of camp, two skilled players are selected to participate in the FCBEscola Select Clinic in Barcelona, Spain, next year.

“It’s a phenomenal opportunity for two players to win the notice of the Barcelona coaching staff and potentially an opportunity to win greater notice on the international stage,” Nash said.

One camper who best exemplifies the positive values put forward by the camp also wins an FC Barcelona jersey signed by this year’s entire club.

Nash also said the organization is looking for school soccer squads that are interested in private instruction each day after camp. If interested, call 844-322-2267 or email info@fcbarcelonasoccer.camp. To register for the camp, visit fcbarcelonasoccer.camp.
