Former Clem Snide front man steps into solo spotlight

Israeli native and Nashville, Tenn.-based Eef Barzelay will play Saturday at The Opolis in Norman.

When alt-country indie rock band Clem Snide called it quits in 2006 after 10 years of touring and recording, lead singer/songwriter Barzelay seemed to have lost something big.

Fortunately, the dissolution of the group " an outfit Barzelay initially founded in 1991 " didn't turn the multitalented Israeli native and Nashville, Tenn.-based artist into the biggest loser. Instead, Barzelay is on a fresh career streak, expanding his creative horizons through extensive touring, scoring films and readying the release of the most emotionally honest and highly personal collection of songs he's ever created.

Written and recorded in the span of two weeks in late 2006, but not released until this month, the ironically titled "Lose Big" is his first album since the band's split, and his sophomore effort as a solo artist.

"The story of 'Lose Big' is that it sort of rose up through the ashes of the last Clem Snide record that I was obsessively working on for a year and a half," he said. "When the bubble finally popped, I had this kind of insane burst of creativity."

In 2007, Barzelay made his composing debut with the movie "Rocket Science," which garnered glowing reviews for its sound track, from the likes of The Hollywood Reporter and Rolling Stone.

Most recently, he provided the score for the upcoming film "Yellow Handkerchief," a road movie set in post-Katrina Louisiana, starring William Hurt.

Barzelay's involvement in the project makes sense, considering that his own life increasingly resembles a road film this year. Having just completed a tour with his longtime friend and fellow Nashville transplant Ben Folds, as well as performing some solo shows in Europe, he's now embarking on a series of club dates that includes the stop in Norman.
